Yale and Stanford Act

As
the college counselor at St. Paul's School, I applaud Yale and
Stanford for deciding not to require students accepted through
early applications to attend the universities (news article, Nov.
7).
Early action programs, when first conceived, were a win-win policy
for the student and the college. Students could, if ready, choose
an early application, and yet could also apply to other colleges
in the regular round of applications. Yale and Stanford are
signaling a return to an ideal of choice for students that has
been eroded by a decade of rankings-driven manipulations.
Good
for Yale and Stanford, and good for the high school classes of
2004!
